WhatsApp to roll out SIM binding, tighten curbs on digital arrest scams

In a big bid to protect Indian citizens, WhatsApp is set to roll out SIM binding to combat the surge in digital arrest scams. The move comes as hackers are increasingly using the platform to pose as police and other authorities, incensing fear to con innocent people into giving up money.

SIM binding will tie the WhatsApp account to the physical SIM card installed in the device, making the use of an account from a satellite device or using a virtual number impossible. The move comes as a part of the Indian government and Supreme Court’s efforts to increase security in the digital environment.

What is SIM Binding and How Does It Work?

SIM binding is a protection that guarantees an account can only be used if the SIM card is physically present on the device. At present, scammers may use “burned” or temporary SIM cards to register WhatsApp and then access the app from various devices or use emulators.

SIM binding will require that the app constantly checks for the presence of the SIM. If the phone is changed or the SIM is removed, the account may be disabled, or the user will have to re-verify their account. This makes it almost impossible for scammers overseas (often in Southeast Asia) to scam Indians with local numbers.

The Crackdown on Digital Arrest Scams

In India, the mere mention of digital arrest scams sends chills down people’s spines. Criminals impersonate CBI or Mumbai Police, or Narcotics Bureau officials, telling the victim that they have a suspicious parcel, or are involved in money laundering. Using a video call, they “arrest” the victim, compelling them to remain in front of the camera for hours as they steal money from their bank accounts.

In response, WhatsApp has told the Supreme Court it has a few tech solutions:

  • Banning of Suspicious Accounts: More than 9,400 accounts related to digital arrest scams were banned in just the first quarter of 2026.

  • Logo-Matching Technology: WhatsApp is using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse if the profile pic is using the logo of the Delhi Police, CBI or another government department to avoid impersonation.

  • Age of the Account: For the first time, the “age” of an unknown account will be visible. If an account purporting to be an officer from a higher authority is communicating from an account that has been created only two hours ago, it’s suspicious.

  • Warning Labels: In addition, users will receive new, stronger warnings if they are receiving the first message from an unknown number and it exhibits characteristics common to digital arrest scams.

New Rules for WhatsApp Web and Desktop

Digital arrest scam prevention also applies to our use of WhatsApp on the web. The “keep me signed in” option is set for an upgrade due to new rules.

  1. Regular Logouts: To keep other people from accessing your account, WhatsApp Web sessions may soon need to be re-authenticated after 6 hours.

  2. SIM Required: You might have to keep your phone with the same SIM card close to continue using your desktop session, to ensure the same person using the Web version owns the phone number.

The Impact of the Tightened Curbs

According to cybercriminals, digital arrest scams are possible because of the anonymity of the internet. SIM binding takes away the “anonymity”. By mapping an identity with a SIM, cyber criminals lose the “withholding identity” factor, and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) can track them down.

Moreover, the Supreme Court has highlighted that these crimes, apart from being a financial scam, also entail a “violation of human dignity.” Many victims have suffered considerable trauma from digital arrest scams.

Safety Tips to Stay Protected

SIM binding will go a long way to help, but vigilance is key. Remember:

  • ❌ No law enforcement will arrest you for a WhatsApp video call.

  • ❌ Never provide OTPs or personal information to an “ATS Department” or “Customs” official.

  • ✅ Verify the caller: Look out for the “Green Tick” for WhatsApp business accounts, but be wary of unexpected legal threats.

  • ✅ Report and Block: If you think you’ve received a digital arrest scam, use the report button within the app.

With WhatsApp implementing SIM binding and other tightened curbs, the hope is to restore the app from being a scammer’s haven, to a safer platform for communication in work and personal life.
