Singh’s appointments come after the head of OpenAI will move to India in September to take charge of the firm in the country. He joins the company as the Managing Director of Asia Pacific (APAC) where he will report to Managing Director Kiran Mani. Over 100 million users of ChatGPT make India the second-largest market after the U.S., underscoring the importance of the region as OpenAI’s second biggest country in terms of active number of users.

Helping to drive Enterprise Growth and Local Partnerships

Singh has become the chief executive of local operations, taking over a gargantuan business and commercial and operational challenge. OpenAI Appoints Former Uber India Chief Prabhjeet Singh as Managing Director for India to drive the company’s market strategies for key commercial verticals like banking, IT services, education and digital public infrastructure, among others, in India.

His main responsibilities include the following areas:

  • Growing consumer growth and scaling up local enterprise adoption.

  • Strengthening long-term partnerships with Indian companies and start-ups.

  • Preeminent regulatory engagement and mentorship in the changing landscape of data compliance across the country.

OpenAI’s goal with hiring a local veteran operator is to better embed its cutting-edge capabilities into India’s dynamic tech landscape, addressing the diverse institutional and developer requirements as well.

Ten Years of Established Leadership at Uber

With extensive experience in managing hyper-growth companies and navigating the complex regulatory environment in South Asia, Singh is well-positioned to offer valuable insights and perspectives on the subject. He worked for Uber for almost 11 years since he joined in August 2015 as Head of Strategy, making his way to President of Uber in June 2020.

He led the Indian team to become one of Uber’s most important markets in the world. Singh is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, IIM Ahmedabad and over a decade ago he was an Associate Partner at McKinsey & Company, advising leading organizations in the telecom, financial services and consumer technology sectors.

Understanding Competitive Pressure and Sovereign AI Debates

This appointment is pivotal. OpenAI Appoints Former Uber India Chief Prabhjeet Singh as Managing Director for India as the domestic AI industry turns competitive and polarising.

Competition is heating up quickly:

  • Rival Movements: Main competitor Anthropic opened its office in Bengaluru late last year with former Microsoft India managing director Irina Ghose as its local head.

  • Domestic Tech Powerhouses: Tech firms such as Google and Amazon, funded domestic AI startups like recently- Unicorn Sarvam are scouting the ground outside their own countries for business developers.

Additionally, the bans on the best frontier models imposed by recent export controls are dominating global policy discussions and calls have been issued to create an Indian sovereign fund of $5 billion a year to create India’s own independent AI infrastructure.

Coalition Working to Improve New Product Security in the Region Also Pursues Expansion of Local Footprint

OpenAI is investing in building infrastructure and expanding the technology team here in India to support this leadership growth. After its first office in New Delhi last year, the company is looking to open more operational offices, in Mumbai and Bengaluru. The firm is actively looking to hire to fill those positions to set them up, including developer experience leads, solutions engineers and deployment engineers.

At the same time, the executive position comes as OpenAI rolls out its upgraded model across the globe, named GPT-5.6 Sol. This release is optimized for security, featuring a robust suite of security measures to deter enterprise jailbreaks and prevent misuse of the system, reflecting OpenAI’s commitment to both expanding its reach in the region and delivering secure, enterprise-grade AI framework solutions to Indian corporations and government entities.
